Oh… Doner Kebab… I Missed You

This is one of my favourite meal 13-14 years ago – Donner Kebab. Unfortunately, it is hard to find in Malaysia. Here in the UK, it is widely available in the Muslim take away and dine in restaurant, normally operated by Pakistani. We found a Muslim shop selling chicken and chips, donner wrap, near our rented house.

In the video below, I was unwrapping the doner kebab that I just purchased. The kebab is served with doner like a bread which is nice and tender. It is also served with a variety of vegetables. I added tomato, cabbage, salad and onion. Then I applied tomato source, mayonnaise and burger source.

Oh yea… I just realized that I keep repeating chicken doner…chicken doner in the video. However, it is actually doner kebab. I don’t know why I said that…haha… OK, that’s it for the time being. Need to get back to work.

Fine Dine @ Arif Yoges Steamboat Barbeque, Rawang

I arrived at Rawang yesterday late afternoon. We stayed at my bro in law’s house. There’s a reason why we are here. You will know that soon. As the dinner time approaches, we headed to Arif Yoges Steamboat Barbeque restaurant. I don’t know what to expect. So, we just agreed and went to the restaurant which was located somewhere in Bukit Beruntung.

This is a buffet style dinner. Adults are charged RM15 while kids are charged RM7.50. Children under 7 is free of charge. Total cost of the dinner is only RM110 for two families. It’s very reasonable and precious experience.

My bro in law made a booking for the steamboat barbeque before we arrived at Rawang. From this photo, you can know that his name is Rizal. He works in Perodua.

These are the sources. The yellow one is butter to fry or make barbeque. The red ones are the chilly. The black one is the barbeque source.

The left hand side is the chicken, cut just like sate. The center is the prawn. The far right is the beef also cut like sate.

Everybody enjoyed the meal. The kids can choose and fry what they want to eat. They can also choose what they want to eat for the steamboat. Personally it's a new experience for me.

The owner of the restaurant snapped our photo using his camera. Since he enjoys snapping photo, I asked him to snap a photo of us (including me inside).

How much should a take away Milo cost?

Do you know Milo? Milo is one of Nestle’ most popular products. Milo itself has become not just a brand name but also name of a drink. However, this is article is not at all related to Nestle’s great or incredible stories. This article serves entirely a different purpose.

Do you love icy cold Milo? I do. My kids do as well. I also love hot Milo. The time to select between cold or hot depends. When it’s morning or late evening, I’ll choose hot Milo. When it’s blazing hot in the afternoon I’ll choose the cold one.

At work, I love to buy a take away Milo from the cafeteria. The take away Milo taste good, breezing cold (indicating sufficient ice cubes to attain optimal temperature), and the volume is generous. Guess what… the price is RM1.00 only. This is considered very cheap for a take away Milo for that amount. The normal market price in ordinary restaurant is RM1.50 depending on locations. There are places where the cost of take away Milo is up to RM2.00. Nevertheless, my favorite time to purchase this take away Milo is after lunch around 2.00- 2.30pm.

Recently, while fetching my kids from school in the afternoon, I saw several kids waiting for the parents with take away Milo that they purchased from the school canteen. The take away Milo looks exactly the same like the take away Milo that I always buy in the cafeteria at my work place. After a few days, I cannot resist asking one of the kids the cost of the take away Milo. Before asking any of them, I asked my own kids first. They said the cost of the take away Milo is RM1.50!!! Wow… I was very shock. That is considered expensive for a primary school. Then I asked one of the schooling kids that is slurping his take away Milo. Yep… it’s confirmed. The cost is RM1.50. Oh gosh!!!

I strongly believe this should not happen. The school must monitor and check the price of the food and drinks that the students are buying (or are forced to buy). What about the quality?

I have earlier highlighted about this before where the food and drink in this school is relatively more expensive. How come the cafetaria at my work place can sell a take away Milo cheaper than the take away Milo in a primary school. I don’t think this make any sense!!!

I’ll update this entry with the photo of the take away Milo from both locations soon.

Diet Coke Anyone?

I have never tasted diet coke before, up until I started my diet last three days. To substitute for my carbonated drink that I love so much, I thought why don’t I drink diet coke instead. From what I read through the carb counter in the Atkins site, diet coke has 0 carb and no sugar at all. Therefore, as I reached the mall, I went straight to the beverage shelf and pick up a can.

Before I tried it, I read the labels on the can which says that any intake of low energy drink should be supervised by a doctor. That alone already triggered a not so comfortable feeling in me. It also says that the drink is not suitable for phenylketonurics, what the hell is that?

As I got home, I decided to give it a sip and it taste nice I thought. I wonder why does it has to be drank only with doctor’s supervision. Even my husband also tried it and says that it taste nice. To investigate on diet coke, yesterday I googled on ‘Is diet coke bad’ and I got an endless list of it. There are tonnes and tonnes of site explaining on how bad the drink is for a human being.

The culprit in the drink is the aspartame added in substitute of sugar.

Aspartame is poison!

Aspartame/Nutrasweet is not very sweet in itself, that may be why Equal puts Dextrose (sugar) and maltodextrin as the first ingredients, so that it tastes sweet.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet is a brain drug that stimulates your brain so you think that the food you’re eating tastes sweet. If you pay attention you’ll notice that when using Aspartame/Nutrasweet, everything you eat at the same time also tastes sweet! This may be why Aspartame/Nutrasweet causes you to crave carbohydrates. Hence, you won’t lose weight using it.
BTW, cyclamates got pulled off the market in the 70′s in the US (but not Canada or the rest of the world) because the sugar industry saw too much of their market disappear.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet (aspartylphenylalanine-methyl-ester) breaks down to its poison constituents at 86 degrees (Aspartic Acid 40%, Phenylalanine 50%, and Methanol 10%). Remember your stomach is at 98.6 degrees! Therefore you should never use Aspartame/Nutrasweet in hot beverages or cooked foods such as Jello. How the FDA allows this remains a mystery. There is mounting evidence that the “Burning Mouth Syndrome” experienced by the Desert Storm troops was actually Methanol poisoning from the Diet Coke they drank lots of, after being exposed to desert temperatures.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet’s 10% Methanol appears in the body quickly and is the same alcohol (wood alcohol also in lacquer thinner), that your mother correctly warned you could make you blind. Many skid-row alcoholics had major problems with this cheap but deadly form of alcohol.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet’s 40% Aspartic Acid is an “excitotoxin” in the brain and excites neurons to death, i.e. it kills brain cells and causes other nerve damage.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet triggers Migraine Headaches This even happened to me!. The Usenet is filled with posts by people who have pinned their migraines down to aspartame/Nutrasweet consumption.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet’s breakdown products attack the bodies tissues and create Formaldehyde which builds up in the tissues forever. Remember the smelly, eye watering fumes from the frogs you dissected in school? They were preserved with Formaldehyde! Formaldehyde is thought to cause cancer.
The American Bottlers Association did not want the FDA to approve Aspartame/Nutrasweet because of what the test report showed. But the FDA approved it anyway!

Airline pilots stay away from Aspartame/Nutrasweet because they are well aware of the documented dangers.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet also breaks down to diketopiperazine [DKP] which is proven to cause Brain Tumors! Brain Tumors used to be rare. Several of the rats in the original study formed brain tumors during their Aspartame/Nutrasweet exposure. The researchers surgically removed the tumors and returned the rats to the study and discounted the tumors.

So there it goes. I was crushed. I decided not to continue drinking it anymore. Eventhough there are many more websites saying that it’s not that harmful because the aspartame content is low, I still think that I don’t want to harm myself. I would just have to bear my craving for carbonated drink these few days.

My husband very rarely drink them. He prefers good fresh filtered plain water, and he drinks a lot of it. What about you? Do you drink carbonated drinks?

Shall We Have Sandwiches For Lunch at Subway?

The first time I tasted Subway sandwiches was went I was in Penang 2 years ago. That time, I was presenting my research paper in an international conference in Penang. I brought the entire family as usual and we had fun eating Subway sandwiches. Since then we (me and my wife) wondered and waited when will Subway come to Johor Bahru.

End of last year, the first Subway was officially open in Sutera Mall, Johor Bahru. We knew about it but the craving for Subway was not there yet. However, today, we went to Sutera Mall with one purpose… to grab some fresh sandwiches at Subway.

Just for your information, the second Subway outlet has been open few weeks ago in Aeon Bukit Indah. We rarely go to Aeon Bukit Indah, so I think the one in Sutera Mall will be visited by us from time to time since it’s closer to where we live and work.

Finally we arrived at the new Subway outlet in Sutera Mall, Skudai, Johor Bahru.

There are plenty of filling options. It's better that you plan ahead and know what you want before you line up in front of the counter. Otherwise, you will spend so much time thinking and wondering which filling to choose.

This was what me and my other half had. Total cost is RM28.50 for 1 set of sandwich (6 inch) + soft drink + 2 huge cookies (various types to choose). Then for my wife just an alacarte 6 inch sandwich. The beauty of Subway and that I want to HIGHLY complement is that they DON'T tax us!!! Yes, there's no service tax or government tax or any bull shit tax!!! The price you see is what you pay. I like this. Love this a lot. I hate paying tax when eating out. We should only pay tax when we are supposed which is in April... I believe so.

This is my Subway sandwich. I asked for Italian hearty bread. It taste superbly good. Then the main filling is tuna + all the fresh available vegetables and various sauces such as mayonnaise, black pepper and some custard + a twice of chilly souse (which is actually not necessary because it is not compatible with tuna). My wife had Italian BMT. Don't ask what BMT stands for. It contains several type of meats.

My wife is ordering subway sandwich for the second time (for take away - for me). After that we headed back to work... with a full stomach.
