Iskandar Malaysia Sustainability Framework Meeting

I was invited to Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) for a program called Iskandar Malaysia Sustainability Framework today at Iskandar Information Center (IMIC). The interesting part is I was invited not as my capacity as an academician or engineer but us as JBCool.com team. For those of you who don’t know, I am the founder of JBCool.com and I run it with a partner and one part time staff. We run JBCool.com on a part time basis (Serious Part Time).

This is really an honour for me and JBCool.com team. I never expected that the article I wrote about Johor Bahru Sustainability which was published in WAVES magazine (November edition) caught their attention. The meeting/discussion which went smooth was participated by various parties. For this round a number of NGOs participated in the round table discussion. It was also a good place for networking as well. I made new friends and new connections. I strongly believe this is a good start for JBCool.com to move on and establish itself within the other online media in Johor and Malaysia.

Visit to Bazar Johor Bahru

Yesterday night we visited Bazar Johor Bahru at 11pm. Wow…it’s very late already but since Ikhwan, my son wanted to “jalan-jalan”, I brought all of them to this new place. I have before that visited Bazar Johor Bahru last month, alone after attending a MCOBA get together night at Plaza Kotaraya, Johor Bahru.

Bazar Johor Bahru, for me is very unique and interesting. There are many items being displayed and sold here. There are many people selling either new or second hand items. There are also karaoke and band (selected nights) as well as food stalls. If you are tired of walking, you can ride the decorative beca with amazing “lip-lap” lights.

I think this is one way of the Johor Bahru municipal council making Johor Bahru more attractive at night. The concept is quite simple. Anybody who wants to sell their goods can come here, book their spot and pay RM5 per night to the municipal council. If you want to do sell any of your goods, you can come and survey for a spot for you to display your products.

What do they sell there?

Wow… Obviously many things. You need to come and see it for yourself. There are… t-shirts, sandals, hand bags, belts, live rabbit, live snakes, live gecko, toys, scarfs, 2nd hand phones, various antiques, laptops, old stamps, old coins, old refrigerators, various types of lighters…. oh…i cannot list everything here…Too much of unique products…

Among items that caught my interest are the coins. There are several RM0.50 coins. Those coins cost RM1.50!!! When I checked, it was because the 50 cent coins came from 1980, 1981 and 1982.

There are also Manchester United Coins with Peter Schemeical and Paul Scholes carved on the coins dated 1998. Those cost RM35 a piece.

There are also music box like this… guess how much does this cost?

This piece of antique which still can play the record is RM2,800!!!

Bazar Johor Bahru is opened each and every night (6pm to 12am). However the parking space is one of my concern. Not much parking space. As a result, cars are parked just anywhere on the side of the road. If you dwell in Johor Bahru or will come down to Johor Bahru for a visit, this is one place you need to visit at night apart from Danga Bay night.

The PDRM summon discount payment was extended once again to the 10th of March 2010 (this coming Thursday). This is a subject I was interested in because I have several summons under my name. I want to clear the summons but they were too expensive. Now that a second chance was given, I need to settle all 5 summons which after discount cost RM580. Just imagine if I don’t pay now, I have to pay more than RM1000++.

I’m a lazy person… I don’t want to go to the police station or post office to make the payment. I don’t want to queue and waste my time. So, I decided to search the net if I can check my summons online and pay it online as well. Surprisingly, I discovered that MYEG provided the PDRM summon online checking as well as summon online payment. It was simple and easy.

Registering with MYEG

The process is quite simple actually. Just register by filling up your particulars. Then submit. You’ll later receive an email with a link for verification. Hit the link to verify your registration. Then, sign in to MYEG. After that just go to check summons online and then key in your IC number. Then if you have PDRM summons, the result will appear. You can also know whether the type of summons are blacklisted or not.

PDRM Summon Online Payment

Then, if you want to pay online (instead of queuing in the post office), just tick the type of summons you want to pay (maybe you want to select only few summons to pay, I assume). After that, select make payment. Currently, the method of payment is via Credit Card (either master card or visa) and no online bank transfer.

After making payment, the receipt will immediately appear and it is ready for you to pay. The receipt is just like the one that you’ll receipt when you pay at the post office or police station.

So, give it a try. Check and pay your summons online. It is easier and faster.

Ops…I forgot to inform, for each and every summon payment, the online payment will charge RM2 each. So, for example, I have 5 summons. Therefore, I was charge RM10 additional on top of the PDRM summons. Well… I don’t mind paying extra RM10 in the comfort of my house rather then go to the post office, queue, wait, sweat etc…..

Johor Flood Mayhem

Last Monday, we went to Kuantan. However, this is no ordinary trip. It is a rainy season and before traveling, I called several police stations to inquire for the latest flood updates at the areas I planned to go through. As expected, Segamat was flooded and that means we cannot use that route. So, the other alternative is to go to Kuantan via Mersing. Oh yea…before I forgot, the trip is from Johor Bahru to Kuantan.

The entire Johor was impacted with continuous rain since Friday if I’m not mistaken. As a result, the flood emerged. OK…. no more musing. Check out the video we managed to prepare…

Visit and lending some helping hand to the poorest people

Last Saturday afternoon, we had the opportunity to visit 5 unfortunate families which are categories as among the poorest in Gelang Patah area, or possibly in Johor Bahru too. They earn less than RM400 per month and they survive with only that amount of money. Thanks to our friend, Maizon who also is our insurance agent, whom invited us to participate in this honorable activity. It was an annual activity organized by her insurance agency.

Following are just some of the selected photos that I have chosen within my limited time while doing my experiments and thinking about my research.

This was taken before we visited the house. There were all together 3 cars and 1 MPV. Off course the MPV is my white Proton Exora. My White Proton Exora was loaded with supplies for 2 families.

Those are the supplies mentioned earlier. Besides food stuffs, there are also clothes which were donated which was put in my MPV after I took this photo.

One of the house that we visited has this. Under the house is actually river of Gelang Patah (not sure what river). Actually all of the houses that we visited are not in good condition.

The 3rd house visited by us. This family has 2 children who are not physically healthy and a wife who is not mentally healthy too.

That’s me in action, off course, carrying 2 packed of 10kg rice.
