Without doubt blogging has emerged as a very powerful tool for people not only to express themselves but also to make money online. Many of them started blogging without realizing the enormous potential that can be achieved financially. I’ve started blogging since the 3rd quarter of  2006 and honestly I just blog to share and ramble about my chemical engineering knowledge.

Day after day, my blog gained popularity and enjoyed spicy organic traffic from uncle Google. Soon, I discovered the opportunity of making money via blogging, which at that time was an alien to me. Since that moment, I never turn back. I keep learning and exploring more creative and innovative ways of making money through blogging. Though I don’t make hell a lot of cash via blogging, but hey…I still earn more than double what I’m paying my maid. That’s when I wrote a short Malay report called “Teknik RM1000 sebulan” which was released end 2009.

I then explored and find other ways on how I can increase my blog earning. That’s when I attended Smart Blogging Seminar conducted by problogger Rohaizad. In that seminar, I learned new ways of making money officially and in-officially from niche blogs. Shortly after that seminar, within less than a month, I managed to cover back the fee that
I paid to attend to that seminar which was RM400. I basically applied the technique and knowledge I obtained from the seminar.

8 months after that, to be exact, yesterday, I start thinking… What is my blogging direction?

I have about 3 dozens of blogs but my income is not beyond 3k yet!!! I need to do something. I need to change my blogging approach. I re-visited 2 blogs which once I occasionally visited while I was not tight up with experiments and re-search, Johnchow.com and Hongkiat.com. I carefully analyze their blogs. I checked the advertisement section and
do some fast calculation. Hey…this guy is earning more than $40k per month just from a blog called johnchow.com while the other guy is earning more than $4.5k per month just from his blog Hongkiat.com. If you are like me, dwelling in Malaysia, just do the maths. This Hong Kiat guy is earning more than RM12k per month, almost as equal to a professor’s salary in a public university. Just imagine how much John Chow is earning in Ringgit Malaysia? Multiply $40k with 3.14 = ……….. ?

So, I need to strategize. Should I split and divide my time to entertain 30+ niche blogs that I presently own and earn quite less OR focus on a minimum of 3 blogs ONLY and try to earn >$3k  per month? That’s more than RM10k per month!!!

It’s not really a huge decision, but still I need to make a decision, especially in this moment where I’m tied up with my research study.

So, what about you? If you are an expert, amateur or beginner blogger, you can also look at this angle. If you are problogger (chances are NO problogger will be reading my blog), you have nothing to think from this plain entry of mine because you’ve earn substantially handsome from your blogging or online property.

If you are a beginner and would like to have my opinion, then read the tips below:

1. Build a blog using your own domain and host the blog somewhere reliable.
2. Don’t use the free blogspot.com or wordpress.com.
3. Focus on creating yummy unique useful content everyday. It’s only one blog, so spend at least 30 minutes a day on your baby blog.
4. Build credibility and trust from your readers.
5. Focus on backlink as well, do lots of blog commenting.

What will happen then?

Your blog will grow bigger and more people will be following your blog.

That will be the time where you can start your own advertising space. Hmmm… What do you think of that?

It is not easy to be successful and rich. Everybody will surely agree with me on that. Don’t you think so? You need a reason and the reason need to be really worthy. You will definitely to fight your ass out to reach your precious goal in life. Being successful is not an individual matter. It’s about teamwork. I would like to share some of the strategy I’m implementing in reaching my ambitious goals (I have not reached my goal yet)

1. Identify and write down your goals.

This is very, I repeat very important. You need to clearly define your goals because this is what you will be aiming for in what ever space time you set. I have my own goals that I’m targeting. So far, my materialistic goal is to accumulate ……… by the age of 40 years old. See… I have clearly define what I want (which I’m not going to reveal here) and set specific time when to achieve it. I also have another 2 career related goals which are to get my doctorate and be a professional engineer in 2012. Those are another clear and distinctive goals. You should have one (or several) and try to laser focus on it (them).

2. Prepare a realistic plan of action

To achieve your goal, no matter how high it is, you need to have a master plan on how to achieve your goals. The plan of action need to be reasonable and realistic. The plan will be one step at a time and progressively reaching your goals. For example, My target is to accumulate ……. by the age of 40 years old. It’s like impossible for me to accumulate …….. with only my salary!!! I must be frank with you that I cannot at all save any penny from my monthly salary. To make the story sad, my wife’s salary also could not be spared as well. Both our combine salary is only sufficient to help us live that month. So, in order to reach our financial goal, both of us have to do extra job. My wife has her consultation projects to take care off and the pay, although not consistently getting project, it is good enough to help us save some money. In the other hand, I’m developing and establishing my online business. I have set the amount of money I need to generate for certain months and years. I have noted the online expenses I have to cover hosting, auto-responder, domains, paying virtual assistant salary, outsourcing some jobs and others. Those are related to our financial goals.

For my postgraduate study, I planned my writing, experiments and others accordingly. It is tough of course to do a Ph.D but my supervisor SMSed me yesterday and told me to see the final end result, which is to have the title “Dr. “in  front  of my name.

3. Associate with those who have the same interest

Do you remember, when you are in school. When the exam approaches, you will create a study group. Why? To discuss about the subjects you are going to face for the examination. Sometimes you don’t understand certain formulas and your friend will help and explain it to you. The same goes to reaching your goal. You might not have the same target, but your colleagues who happens to be in the same interest (same niche) will be there for you. This is the guys that you share your interest passionately with. Do you have those friends?

I’m glad that I have known and be friends with those who are in the same circle. I can discuss about blogging strategies, activities happening in the internet marketing world locally and internationally, making money online and much more. Once in a while, like tonight, I’ll be catching up with some of my online friends, not empty chatting but getting up to date with the latest internet and cyberspace buzz. We share the same interest and we are very passionate of it. We share information and help to build each others’ success.

When it comes to my study and research, I’m fortunate that I am in a research group. There are other Ph.D, masters and undergraduate student performing their own research. We discuss research related information. No need for me to cover those nasty technical terminology here.

There are actually other approach on this. You can also associate with those having same interest in blogs, forums and social sites. If you have an interest of playing remote control drift car, you will surely visit remote control drift car blogs, forums and be a member of a related group in social sites.

4. Get yourself a mentor

I covered about this recently. This is as equally as important as point number 1, 2 and 3 above. To speed up a reaction (process) to see the end result, you need a mentor to guide and help you. This is important to speed up your destiny to success. A mentor will guide you and based on his or her experiences. They will show which path for you to take, what you should do, what you should not do, what you should focus on etc. Without a mentor, you can still reach your goal but maybe it will take longer duration of time. I consider a mentor like a catalyst – something that can speed up a process. Why choose to struggle 13 years if you can make it in 4 years with the help of a mentor? Get my point?

There are mentors who want something in return such as certain amount of fees or profit sharing. There are mentors who want their names as co-writer in a book or paper that we publish. There are also certain mentors who sincerely wants to help us without any charge. Either way won’t matter. If it is important, just get a mentor and make sure you get a good one, those who have the real experience and success. Do not get an adviser. An adviser will only advice and do not know about what you doing. They may know theoretically but practically they are not at all fit to be called a mentor. So, be careful.

I’m glad that I have all 4 points covered now for my goals. Different goals, different target, different strategies, different type of colleagues and of course different mentors. What about you?

It’s really crazy!!! With all the loads I’m carrying now, I cannot do my online job comfortably.  I’m hectic and tight up with my studies and other official jobs. That’s when I started outsourcing. I have been outsourcing some of my online stuffs like writing articles, making backlinks, article and web directory submission, forum posting and others. Those were all on job/project basis. I pay those freelancers after they completed their work. I must say there are works that I’m satisfied and there are also those which after I checked, I’m pissed off. Most that I’m not satisfied were the web directory submissions. I’m expecting to improve my backlinks, but unfortunately it’s like paying somebody for nothing.

Well, that’s the end of web directory submission. I’m going to change my tactics.

On Saturday, I decided to get myself a virtual assistant (VA). The VA will assist me on most of my online marketing job. Those marketing jobs include writing articles, re-writing articles, submitting articles to article directories, creating videos, submitting videos, comment marketing and so on. The list does not stop there.

Sunday night (entering Monday morning), I got myself my new VA. He will work for me and do what ever I asked him to do, to help me with my blogging business. I’m really glad to have him on board helping me with my online jobs. He has done some work for me earlier and I can see that he works hard, willing to learn, listen to me, can work independently with minor supervision, responsible and honest. In return, I’ll pay him monthly salary via paypal. He will work for me part time, 4 hours a day.

Having somebody working for/with me like that is one of the most crucial online decision I’ve ever made. I’m basically leveraging some of my online work that I am not capable of taking care off due to my other loads. I’m aware that I don’t have that much capital, but I badly need a VA to help me. Having a VA will help me speed up my marketing and catalyzed my back-linking process.

I’m glad to finally employ a VA. I’m not sure what you guys are thinking now… but I would love to know your reaction and comment…

I just attended a 2 days superb financial training which was held in my work place. The financial training is called FISH – Financially Independent Strong & Healthy, conducted by PM Dr. Ahmad Rahman Songip, a trainer/consultant from Harvest the Mind Sdn. Bhd.

The single most important reason cited by many studies on the causes of numerous family and personal problems is the inability to manage financial matters.  It seems that we are not at all prepared to face the reality of life in managing our financial matters. The reason is simply because financial literacy is never being taught in school and university education systems. We are not taught and trained on how to manage our financial matters and how to become rich and wealthy!

So how do we manage our financial matters? Mostly by simply following the way our parent or our peers did.   Then through several trials and errors, and surely more errors along the way, only then we may see the correct way of managing our financial matters. By then, it may be already too late for some of us.

Personal financial management is a long term planning effort.  The old saying, “Failing to plan is planning to fail” is the truth in financial management. Due to financial illiteracy, many going to be pensioners are still in the dark on their financial status and still need to work after their retirement age.

I must say that FISH has provided some foundation in practical financial literacy and the mechanics of financial planning and management so that I can attain the status of financial independence, at least by the time I reach the mandatory retirement age. If one follows the recipe offered in the training with the right mind-set, one could theoretically retire earlier and wealthier.

I highly recommend any of you regardless of your age or financial situation to attend this training. The next one will be held this October 2010. The fees of this training is RM2480. However, I’m currently negotiating with Dr. Ahmad to provide some discount to my blog readers. I’ll update the discount soon here.

I have been observing something recently. It is something that should be of great concern to everybody, you and me.

How I wish that I can have that precious awareness when I was younger and not later like right now. But, deep inside, I still feel blessed because we’re not doing that bad compared to some of our peers.

What I’m referring to is the financial awareness and concern.

I chatted with my brother Budeen yesterday about many things. Things and activities that we are doing. Importantly, we did discuss about our financial management and investment portfolios.

I still remember after returning to Malaysia from United Kingdom with my Chemical Engineering degree, I did not save and invest. Unlike my colleagues, I did not opt to be an engineer. Instead I work as a research assistant and then research officer and earned lower salary. Then I pursued my masters degree, still with little amount of allowances, but still I’m glad of all the fortune granted by God to me and my family. I got married while doing my masters and we lived as a simple couple earlier on.

Budeen introduced my to a huge MLM network business and together me and my wife, we worked our ass out to build a huge empire. We are suppose to earn money not spent money. We lost a lot of money buying all the so call business support system which theoretically will help us grow stronger in the business. To make long story short, we quieted the business and began joined other MLM business. Yes, that kept repeating on and off with other MLM companies until if I’m not mistaken, we stopped totally in any of them in 2005. My wife told me, if anybody invites me to sell anything even stone or wood, I will joined them and grow that bloody MLM business. That was how fanatic I was with the MLM business. It took such a long time, huge financial lost before I came to conclusion that I’m not belong to that business category. Neither MLM or direct selling is not my cup of tea. I totally stopped. I won’t waste my money, time and enery to be involved in any MLM anymore.

When I recalled my past experience, I hope and wish that I am not involve with those kind of business, instead I hope I invest my little money into something more beneficial such as unit trust or gold. But those were just memory now. I can’t change it. I can’t do anything except to improve our live, save some money and invest them wisely.

My youngest brother, Botak, at his age has the most advantage. He is still young, still an undergraduate student but yet he has the awareness and exposed himself to topics such as investment, insurance, gold, unit trust, business etc. Compared to the other siblings, at the same age, he is the richest and have more savings and investments. At 21, I don’t have saving more than RM2,000. Hmmm…I can’t actually remember how much I have that time. Maybe I don’t have even RM1,000. But Botak, at 21 he has accumulated far more than that. With his awareness and investments, I bet he will make the money or gold grow for him as times goes by. Perhaps before 30 he can accumulate 6 figure in total, maybe 7 figure by early 30s.

Why Botak can do that?

I can’t really answer on his behalf. I can only speculate or guess. My guess is that he is studying in KL and always hang around in Budeen’s house in KL. So, Budeen, as an older brother helps to educate his younger brother about financial awareness.

Well, that’s one point.

Having the awareness alone without enough money to save and invest won’t be enough. He must have more money to invest. Yes, he has that. He has make full use of the money he received for his study and from our father and invested it. Unlike many other students or teenagers, he spent his money wisely. Unlike me, I barely have extra money while I was a student like him. My money mostly came from my loan that I have to pay on a monthly basis now to JPA for the next 12 years. My father did gave me some, but it was already quite late and if I’m not mistaken maybe the amount was about RM200 for the final 4-5 months. However, I appreciate it very much because my father bought be a laptop on my final year in UK. At least it the cash of buying the laptop can be counted to lessen his income tax.

As for me… Now I’m struggling to save and invest what ever money I have. It’s not easy because having 3 kids in this family, it is not easy to keep money, nor to invest them. Frankly, our salary is not enough to maintain all our monthly commitments and other obligations. Hence, we need to do more, I mean other part time jobs. My wife is focus on her consultations while I’m focusing on building my online business. That’s why…life goes on and we still need to do what ever it takes to survive the fierce capitalist world, in the right way.

Moral of the story…

No matter how young or how old you are, save some money and invest it wisely. I don’t care if you are 17, 25, 32, 40 or even 51 years old. You should save and invest you money wisely. Invest in gold and unit trust. Make the money work for you. Don’t spend to lavish and buy all those branded merchandises. Live simple. Live happily. I’m beginning to save something and I’ll try to stick on the plan. What about you…

I read somewhere that a common trait in almost all millionaires around the world is they spend wisely, save money and invest them intelligently. They know, money does not come easy and handy. We have to work for it. But at another stage, let the money work for you.

If you are new in the blogging world and have bigger plans to earn money from blogging in the future, than here are some simple and useful tips that you can apply while writing your post and publishing them:

1. Try to blog in English if you plan to have wider monetization method. Unless your target is local audience and you have other huge plan such as covering local gossips and entertainment industry, you can blog in your own mother tongue language.

2. Write unique blog post. It might be tough to write by yourself in English, but remember the saying… practice make perfect!!! So, keep on writing (or typing) your niche articles in English. Don’t worry about your English level. Just do it (using Nike’s motto). You’ll get better and better in future.

3. Fill up and label appropriate categories. This is imperative for several reasons. It will be easier for your readers to select which topic he or she prefers to read in your blog. Besides that, it is good for optimization strategy in attracting the crawler or spider from the search engines. There are also making money programs that look at how you arrange your categories in order to allow them to give you more payments.

4. Fill up the “Tags” as well. This will also assist into some unknown level towards better positioning in the Search Engine Result Page (SERP). Just like the previous point, some advertiser or make money program love blogs that have more tags. This will allow more pages in your blog to be indexed.

5. Post on a consistent basis!!! This is very important. Let your readers know what is your pace. You don’t need to inform them officially in your blog saying “I blog once a week” or “I blog 3 times a week”. That is not necessary. It is ample that you set your own pace and blog according to your time. If you can blog twice a week, then stick to it. If you have more times to spend and you think you can blog everyday, than by all means, stick to once a day. Just be consistent. You don’t want to blog like crazy on a daily basis and suddenly you forgot to update your blog for 2 weeks. This will put off your audience. If you are going for a dream vacation, use the schedule posting feature inside Wordpress. The new Blogger.com also has this feature embedded.

6. Learn how to use good keywords in your title and blog post. This is one of the critical parameters to ensure that your blogpost is better identified by the crawler and sits comfortably in good SERP position. Let say your niche blog  is about Nokia handphone and you want to blog about their battery. Think of the most suitable rich keyword that relates your niche with the point you are going to elaborate in your blogpost. Perhaps “Nokia handphone battery charger” is a good choice. Let that be your title. In your blog post, mention the same keyword about 3 to 5 times. This can make your blog post shoot up to the top of the SERP for that particular keyword!!!

7. Include nice beautiful photo(s) in your blog post. The photo might not be related but it is acts as a decorative art for your blog, just like the photo frame on your house wall. If it is related, then that’s even better. I will always try to include whatever photo on my blog post nowadays to attract new comers attention. This tip was given to me personally by HujanBatu.com. Thanks bro.

p/s: Why Durian photo?

I never knew nor imagine the income potential via blogging until I started passively earn money recently. It has been such a beautiful and marvelous experience. Though the income is not as high as some of my part time or full time bloggers counterpart but I’m extremely glad for the blessing God gave me and my family.

When the salary is no longer sufficient to support us (believe me there are times we faced this), the blogging money comes very handy. I just go to the bank and clear, or can I say claim the Google Adsense money. The stronger the US dollar, the better for me, but not good for the country!!! The same goes to other making money opportunities that I’m participating in.

If you are new with blogging and expect to earn money as soon as possible, please don’t dream so. Making money via blogging requires a huge passion and spectacular amount of time for you to build and establish the foundation – just like cooking a huge meal for 500 people as you can see me in the photo up there… For me, it took about 2 years plus to reach my current position and earning. Cooking that curry meat took only 5 hours to complete the thermodynamic process, but the preparation before it must be considered too. I’m not going to stay comfortable at this level but I’m going to work my ass out to another higher level. I’m focusing on some smaller amount of blogs now, some of it is a join venture between me and a friend.

Despite of having and paying for an autoresponder, my time won’t allow me yet to make full use of the automatic making money machine.

Why?

The answer is very simple. “Time” is not on my side. As some of you have known, I’m married, have 3 precious beautiful kids, have a career that I dream off, currently pursuing my Ph.D in Chemical Engineering and also preparing my project paper for my professional engineer status. The time allocated for online blogging and affiliate marketing is minute. That’s fine for me and that’s why I try hard to manage and optimize my time. So, if it’s meant to build an online business, I’ll create and establish a passive one and I know blogging can provide me that financial boost and security (anti recession).

If God spare me some more extra time, I’ll spend it to construct and launch my own affiliate business. I got one in the line but I have not launch it yet. Need to improve few things before it can be officially released. A successful affiliate business will ensure more wealth faster than blogging. Integrating blogging and affiliate marketing will be a complete combination of financial fire power that everybody will want to achieve. Combined, both platform will be semi automatic passive income and that is what all of us should target for.

So, what about you? I’m not sure but I would love to know your plans. I’m not aiming to be a blogger celebrity or a famous affiliate marketer. It’s enough to be an underground person who have thick pockets and invest his money in high performing mutual funds + golds.

Last Satuday night, my family was invited to attend a “kenduri” at a neighbour’s house. After Isya’ prayer in the “surau” in front of my house, we went to the “kenduri”. My wife and kids have earlier went to the house which hosted the kenduri (female and kids after Magrib) while all the male counterpart turn is after Isya’.

I noticed a person that I really admire and I wanted to get closer with. I prayed Isya’ next to him in the surau earlier. He lives in the same street as me but in a corner lot house. He graduated as a mechanical engineer (not sure from where) but now he is a successful business man. His name is Hj. Razak. I’m not sure of his full name yet.

So, after taking my food, I sat at a corner of a table arranged in the kenduri. Hj. Razak arrived soon and sat at the same corner. So, the 2 of us are there and this is my opportunity to get to know him better. The rest of the guys sat in different table.

We chatted and get to know each other. He knows that I’m currently pursuing my Ph.D in Chemical Engineering and will go for a research attachment overseas soon. I asked him about his business. He is running a mechanical engineering service business. He started his business when he was 34 years old (the same age as me now). At 40 years old he reached millionaire status which is something to be proud of. Now he is 44 years old and slower down his working pace because he etablished the business to work for him already.

He told me, when we started his business a decade ago, he will go out from his house at 7 am and return home at night. He seeks for leads and opportunities where he can provide his engineering services. He worked so hard. He used his engineering knowledge, the one that he knows the best. He focused on this business because he has failed several times with other business that he don’t have knowledge and skill off. He said to me, if you want to be rich, you need to read “buku Daim Zainuddin”. The book title sounds something like “becoming a millionaire”, but I can’t be certain on the exact title of the book.

I was really amazed with his story and I’m proud to know somebody like Hj. Razak. He is a nice guy, low profile, kind, not arrogant at all. There are a lot of positive attributes that I need to learn from him.

Let me share some points that he highlighted to me:

1. Work hard before you reach success.

2. Focus on what you know to run the business and avoid running the business in something you don’t know.

3. Don’t get too excited when you see huge money. Don’t buy luxurious items with those money. Use it to grow your business first before you spend it.

4. Master outsourcing. In a business, we can’t do everything on our own. Hence, we need to have subcontractors to help us do some of the important work. We need to get hold of the outsourcing skill.

5. From time to time, give away your money for charity or sedekah. This is important to get our Gods blessing and too purify your wealth. Do it sincerely and wait for a miracle that God will send to you.

Well, those are just a few points that I can recall. Even if you are a student or an employee, like me, we still can be a millionaire with the correct attitude, mindset and goal. It doesn’t matter what type of business… blogging… internet marketer, creating, selling and marketing products and services.

I just don’t understand!

What is your motive?

Have I hurt you before?

Do I know you?

Why I am your target?

Am I your competitor?

Why do you have to hack my blog?

These are the questions hunting me now. One of my blog was suddenly hacked and I’m very pissed off with this evil devil hacker! This is the 2nd time I have experienced being hacked. My first experience was in 2007 when I hosted and own my own chemical engineering forum. That time I’m still naive and when the forum which already have 300+ members was hacked, I have no clue at all on how to cure it. I turned to the singly handed hosting owner which I hosted my forum. However to my disappointment, he was not helpful enough. Or maybe I should describe it as he put no effort at all to help me. Damn both the hacker and the hosting… At the end, I lost my forum, the registered member sand precious chemical engineering content.

Now… again, I’ve been hacked. Now, I’m sorting this out with my partner Azwan. Please pray that our blog will be OK…
