Why I Blog In English?

English is not my first language, it is actually my second. My mother tongue is Malay language and I speak this language most of the time. However, at work, during meeting or while communicating with my superiors, I use English. All of my written reports, instructions, paper works, reference manual etc also are in English. When it comes to internet surfing, most of the websites and blogs are in English. Even my favourite local newspaper is The STAR, which is written in English . In short I apply more English at work and during surfing the web. Oh yea…. and also during watching TV and movies. However, don’t be mistaken. I’m not that good in English, but I’m still continuously learning and improving my vocabulary, pronunciations, comprehension, writing and communication skills.

Having a blog like this, totally written in English is also one way or my strategy in improving my writing skills. It took me slightly a longer time to make a post because I have to carefully structure a sentence to avoid silly spelling or grammatical mistakes. I don’t mind the extra time because I know it is worth posting in English. You can also notice that I don’t use bombastic or flowery English. My writing are just pure basic straight forward English. Sometimes, I ask my wife (who has better English) to proof read my post and edit wherever necessary (that includes this post!). This is one of the reasons of me having an English blog –> to improve my English. The other two reasons are:

i-think-therefore-i-blog

International Language

English is an international and universal language. More people in the world understand and use English compared to other languages. That means English medium website(s)/blog(s) have more exposures and more readers, hence bigger market to capitalize. This will lead to more traffic being generated.

It is such a great advantage to have audiences from all around the world. It is fun to communicate and associate with people who have an enormous difference in time zone than us (which means from other continent). A lot of things (ideas/opinions) can also be shared and learned, on top of the opportunity in making many more new friends. Who doesn’t like to have new friends, great isn’t it?

More Monetizing Opportunity

There are countless advertising companies offering money making opportunity for bloggers out there. All of these companies require English language as the main blogging medium. Some of those advertising companies are Google Adsense, ReviewMe, TextLinkAds, PayPerPost, Kontera, TTZ Media, and many more. By registering and participating with their programs, chances of earning more money from the blog(s) are more wide open. There are already a lot of part time bloggers changing their status to a full time pro blogger, thanks to the money making opportunities provided by those advertising companies.

Exception can be made to Google Adsense which allow some countries to use their own language (Indonesia for instance); and also local advertising companies such as Nuffnang and Advertlets (in Malaysia), which accept local language blogs.

To other fellow local bloggers, no offense in writing in your mother tongue language. It all depends on why you want to blog. It might be for fun, to share with others, to keep a record of your activities or to make new friends in the virtual community. I also read a number of quality Malay language blog and I found them very interesting, informative and attractive. As for me, blogging has become a very serious hobby as well as an emerging industry. I love to write and share with others. At the same time, wouldn’t it be great to get some incentives from doing the things that we enjoy? What about you?

P/S: For your information, this is a recycled blog post. I just re-post this article back after 5 years. The actual date of the publication of this blog entry is 25 February 2007. The comments are all the original ones that were made 4-5 years back. What a nostalgic post. I did not change it. I just change the publication date and inserted a new image (credit to observingvessel.wordpress.com).

facebook

Do you have a Facebook account? I believe yes. Most of those in the online community like you and me have a Facebook account. A lot of those utilizing Facebook like to share experiences, status, photos, videos, quotes, opinions etc in Facebook. When I ask my wife who is a regular in Facebook, she fancy reading the status of her friends and  see the photos being uploaded. Others like to play games such as Farmville and other games that I’m not familiar with at all.

There are also users who have a Facebook account but rarely keep updates in Facebook. I belong to that category. Honestly, I have better things to do rather than spending my time in Facebook reading other people status. Please, don’t get me wrong. I’m not condemning those Facebook enthusiast. I still read other people’s status when I’m in Facebook, but not that often. I’m just prioritizing my time because I have studies and research to do, consultation works to dwell with, blogs to take care, family to be with and others.

My moderate Facebook activity

I’ll normally log into my Facebook account when somebody tagged me. I’ll be curious and log in to check out why I’m tagged. Normally, I’ll leave comments if it is necessary and to interact with others. In other occasions, I’ll log in once in a while, maybe around 3-5 times a week. I rarely leave my status, check my notifications and messages. Currently I have 50+ notification and 60+ messages which I don’t read. So, please don’t send me messages on my Facebook (because I don’t read it). I prefer communication via email. I’ll normally accept friends in bulk process which means, I’ll allocated once a month to accept those who want to be friend’s with me. I normally won’t accept recommended friends by others. It’s better if those people sincerely want to be friends with me.

Should you focus on Blog or Facebook?

If one like to share, I strongly believe it is better to share stories, activities and anything in a blog rather then Facebook. Why?

1. Total control

You have total control in your own hosted blog. You can back up your blog and its content and keep it. You may not have total control in your Facebook account. Can you back up your facebook? It is better to have something that we have total control. Isn’t it?

2. Make money potential

You spend time online sharing this and that. Why not work smart and make money in one shot. This can be done if you have a blog. You spend countless hours writing in your blog and your visitors (loyal and first timer) read them. At the same time, you can add in advertisements and enjoy the money from it. Can you do this with Facebook? You can share this and that, but you cannot place your own advertisement codes from any make money program inside your Facebook page. However, Facebook is a good place to market your products, services, blogs and websites. It can be a powerful marketting tool but not make money. So, you can promote your blog via Facebook.

Think about it…

So, it’s your call. I’m not an expert to say which is best for you or me. Those 2 points mentioned above are just two issues that I found crucial because it involves time and money. If you opt to spend more times sharing in ablog, you need to invest little money to get your own domain and hosting; and a lot of time building the blog, but the rewards may be sweet. If you blog with a free platform such as blogspot.com or wordpress.com, you still don’t have the total control. However, using blogspot.com, you can place advertisements in your blog and wait for money rolling to you.

Facebook is a free account. You are free to share anything, make friends and build massive networks. You can continue sharing your updates, status etc. You can also create groups and start various activities include playing games.  If you are not inclined to making money online and the hassle to manage a self hosted blog, then by all means, continue  being an active member of Facebook.

My Stand

I’ll keep my account in Facebook. I use Facebook to keep up with other friends activity once in a while. I use Facebook as one of my marketing strategies for some of my blogs. It has proven to be an important tool and it works well. I also created a group and once in a while communicate within members. The members of the group  keep growing and that’s a good sign because I can send traffic to my blogs by leveraging Facebook efficiently. Estimated percentage of my online time spent on Facebook is around 3-5%.

I’m still focusing on my blogs most of the time. I’m working on to create a residual passive income with my blogs. It works perfectly but of course it needs a lot of time, passion and patients. I prefer spending 4 to 6 years now to establish all my blogs and after that earn a cool 4 to 5 figure monthly income from it.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, both blog and Facebook are very important tools in Web 2.0 in this era. Both have its strong points and it is clever if you can integrate both of them. Focusing ONLY on blog and ONLY on Facebook is considered under utilizing the beauty and power of both of them. With that I rest my case. It’s all up to you… :)

OK guys, here I am presenting the spectacular “Threesome Review” for the top three top commentators from AzwanHadzree.com. I’m so excited and fired up to do this review and I hope it will benefit the winners big time. The lucky bloggers are Syamsul, Bent, and wameza. Enjoyce…. ;)

Threesome Contest Blog Winners Review:

1. Syam (Vangardx.net/blog)

vangardx.com

Syamsul Ariff is the mastermind behind Vangardx.net/blog. Born 22 years ago in Batu Pahat, Johor, this romeo (that’s what I call him) must be damn bloody proud of himself. He has earned three reviews from the Threesome Contest blog hosts. He really has something to prove. Yes, he proofs that he is crazy…. crazy for traffic. This young soldier has all the firepowers and ammunitions to be the brigadier general in the virtual discipline. He has created and maintain a fantastic blog, packed with various interesting sizzling hot topics. Vangardx.net has extremely good Alexa ranking i.e. 88,308 which is far better than mine. Looking at his traffic, recently, I ordered an ad spot for a month duration from his blog. Frankly, I’m really not good in designing a banner. Hence, he helped designed a cool animated banner for me. As a result, I enjoyed substantial amount of traffic originated from Vangardx.net. If you want good exposure for your site, I highly recommend you to buy his ad spot. Just try it for a month and you’ll surely notice a spike of traffic increase for your site. Mmm… I’m not getting any commission for announcing this, however, I welcome some if Syam want to pass me some slice of what he’ll be getting :) or treat me at Burger King!

2. Bent (BentDaniel.com)

bent

Bent Daniel, a young married lad living just a few kilometers from me, in Johor Bahru. He has a very neatly arranged 3 column wordpress blog. Like me, he’s new in the blog sphere; a full time husband, full time father, full time employee and a part time blogger. Currently, his Alexa ranking has shoot up to 800,320 from 6,209,600. That’s a very excellent achievement considering the lack of time spent to maintain his blog. I believe his commitment in visiting other blogs and leaving comments have helped improved his blog performance. I’m not sure whether he has committed in other marketing strategies? Currently staying at Google PR 1, I believe he has the credibility to increase that single digit to a better one. It’s just a matter of time. From my observation, he is currently monetizing his blog with Google Adsense and a few affiliate programs. I look forward to see some income statement post earned by Bent. Can you do that Bent? Not now, just do it whenever you’re feel like doing it :)

3. Nuur (Wameza.com)

If you fancy traveling around Peninsular Malaysia (Cuti-cuti Malaysia), look no where, just look at Wameza.com. This is certainly one kind of a blog that you must check out. The line “Where Travel Meet Entertainment” implies that there are some fraction of entertainment informations provided. Yes, my instinct was correct accept the entertainment section was focussed on movies. Wameza.com Alexa ranking is currently standing at 2,243,505 while Nur (the proud owner of the blog) needs to work harder to earn a nice digit for Wameza’s page rank. For me, the blog look too simple, too plain. Maybe, the blog is still very new (it was created in January 2008) or that is Nur’s style or taste. If that’s the case, then I rest the case. I think the About page need to be reinvented and rejuvenated so new visitors can learn and have better comprehension on what Wameza.com is.

Wameza.com

Conclusion

Those three fantastic blogs are very interesting and enriching. Check out them, leave comment, be friends with them. They are totally cool guys with hot blogs… :)
